India has emerged as the fastest-growing major economy in the world. The World Bank projects that India will surpass Japan and Germany to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2030. Recognizing this dynamic growth, the European Union, particularly Germany, is intensifying its economic collaboration with India. In 2022, the EU and India marked 60 years of bilateral relations, and in October 2024, the German government introduced its strategic paper ‘Fokus auf Indien’. The joint declaration during the 7th IGC (Inter Governmental Consultations) at New Delhi in October 2024 between PM Modi and Chancellor Scholz highlighted the renewed momentum in bilateral engagement across government, industry, civil society and academia that has played an instrumental role in advancing and deepening the strategic partnership between India and Germany.

GIBS 2025: THEME FOR BUSINESS SUMMIT PANEL DISCUSSION

Theme:

Collaborative Strategies for Strengthening Maritime Trade: Expanding Partnerships between Indian and German Businesses

This discussion will focus on innovative partnership models aimed at enhancing maritime trade between India and Germany, including market integration, workforce development and skilling, promotion of green technologies, artificial intelligence, and aviation technologies into the maritime sector.

Sub-Themes:

1. Labour and Market Integration

Investigating effective labour policies and market integration strategies that can facilitate smoother trade, improve operational efficiencies, and ensure fair labour practices in the maritime industry. An example is the Indo-German Maritime Labour Agreement, which sets out standards for working conditions and dispute resolution mechanisms. Another example is the Indo-German Trade Facilitation Agreement, which has simplified customs processes, making it easier for goods to move between the two countries.

2. Skilling and Workforce Development

Emphasizing the vital role of skilling and workforce development in the adoption and implementation of maritime trade. This includes providing targeted training programs that equip workers with the necessary skills to operate and maintain new, sustainable maritime technologies. . For example, the German Maritime Centre in collaboration with Indian maritime institutions offers specialized courses in ship management, navigation, and environmental protection. Nancy Faeser, the German Interior Minister, said. “We have increased skilled immigration by 77 per cent since 2021. Today, (April 2025) we are a country that invests more in integration and is more attractive to talented and qualified workers and skilled workers from all over the world. Germany is a country of immigration – and must remain so. This is crucial for the future viability of Germany as a business location,”

3. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Discussing the application of AI in optimizing maritime operations, enhancing decision-making processes, and improving logistics and supply chain management. AI systems can predict and mitigate potential disruptions, ensuring smoother and more efficient maritime trade. AI can also play a crucial role in monitoring environmental impacts, thus supporting green initiatives.

4. Promoting Sustainable Logistics through Green Technologies

Sustainability is at the forefront of maritime logistics innovations. Germany and India under the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) are promoting joint ventures to develop and implement green and sustainable technologies. These include eco-friendly ship designs, alternative fuels, and energy-efficient port operations. Such initiatives are aimed at reducing the environmental impact of maritime trade while maintaining operational efficiency.

5. Maritime Aviation & UxVs

Research and development in unmanned and autonomous maritime vehicles, both aerial and sub-surface, are advancing. These technologies promise to modernize maritime operations by providing more flexible, efficient, and safer methods of transport and surveillance.
